The Marlborough 2024 harvest saw exceptionally good conditions, resulting in high quality grapes throughout the region. Mild conditions through spring and early summer saw moderate to low crops set. Continuing warm dry conditions through summer saw optimal fruit development and healthy, disease free grapes. Flavour development and acid retention were enhanced by a perfect combination of sunny days and cool, clear nights. With years of viticultural expertise within the family to draw on, and perfect conditions, fruit was harvested at peak flavour balance. Overall, 2024 is anticipated to be one of the very best years Marlborough has seen in recent times.
From the Riverby vineyard situated directly opposite the winery, yields were low, and the grapes were picked towards the end of harvest. Renowned as a signature variety in Austria, Gruner Veltliner grows well in Marlborough’s climate, and shows its distinct characters on the stony, free draining soils of Central Rapaura.
With a talented and enthusiastic team of international superstars in the winery, this harvest provided an opportunity to showcase the very best flavours of an exceptional vintage.
Picked late in the season in the cool of the morning, the ripe, concentrated grapes were gently pressed and fermented slowly in a small stainless steel tank. Rested on yeast lees for 7 months before bottling in Summer 2024
Gruner Veltliner’s typical notes of white pepper and ripe stonefruit are present and correct, with a concentrated firm texture leading to a long dry finish. Expect the wine to soften and fill out with ageing and more nutty, creamy characters to emerge.
With a dry finish and a texture suited to dining, this wine is a versatile partner to dishes with white meats, salads and can stand up well to spicy and fragrant dishes. Slightly chilled with Wiener Schnitzel will give the most authentic experience.
